Nutrition and the Human Body

The Science focus for this half-term in Year 3 is on Nutrition and the Human Body. Recently we were lucky enough to have an expert guest speaker in the form of one our Year 3 mummies!

Mrs Burrell came to see us armed with information, experiments and fun activities to inspire the children. They recapped their food groups knowledge and looked at how different fruits and vegetables are grown.

After discussing a balanced diet, we were getting pretty peckish…so Mrs Burrell showed us how we should wash our hands effectively before we started our food tasting. The children squirting some Glow-Bug solution on their hands were tasked with going to the sink and washing it all off… back in the classroom a special UV light showed us just how effective (or not!) our hand washing techniques had been.

The afternoon was rounded off with a fun taste testing session trying out a variety of healthy alternatives to crisps and cake. We then had the opportunity to make sandwiches with processed and unprocessed ingredients to see which would taste better.

Finally, to ensure we hadn’t eaten too much, Mrs Burrell had the children demonstrate how to do effective sit ups, squats and push-ups and talked about how to include them in their everyday lives.

A massive thanks goes out to Mrs Burrell for such a fun afternoon and really inspiring the children.
