Personal, Social, Health, Economic, Education: PSHEE

On a damp and dreary Friday afternoon, I did a learning walk around the school. One can sometimes start to flag at this time of the week, but walking round and talking to our wonderful children lifted my spirits and made me smile, not just for the rest of the day but for the rest of the weekend.

The Nursery was a hive of activity, children dressing up and creating games in the wigwam, others painting creating their beautiful birds. We sat in a circle and the children shared what they had been learning about this week with me. They have been appreciating our wonderful world by making bird feeders and helping with the RSPB bird count. It ended with the children counting to 10 with me in French.

Reception have been reading ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark’. They have been talking about their feelings and being kind to one another and how bed time routines like reading a book and taking a favourite toy to bed can be a comfort. Just as I was leaving, they wanted to share a song they had recently learned ‘Kung Hei Fat Choy’.

Y1 were using their initiative to make Chinese Fortune tellers and writing kind messages for their friends inside. They have also made Chinese Dragons and learnt how to count to 10 in Mandarin. Furthermore, they have been learning about teeth hygiene and how to keep their mouths healthy by using disclosing tablets to show areas on their teeth they had missed!

In Y2 the children were expanding their knowledge and curiosity of the UK, learning about flags. Once again, their Lowry artwork on industrial Britain was to their usual high standard (let’s hope they win another award!)

Moving on to Y3 who were recognising what is similar/different about each other. In addition to this they have learnt an important message on keeping safe with ‘Pantasaurus’! They have also been thinking about a healthy mind and body – how to keep yourself happy, including ‘relaxation, yoga, watch a favourite film, snuggle up with your pet and mindfulness techniques’.

Top Trumps was the focus in Year 4, the children were collaborating and playing games with their growth mindset cards. I was blown away with the detail of their self-portraits on acetate in Art, which truly are amazing. In Science they were appreciating how sounds are made from vibrations. Enthusiastically they discussed the importance of money matters, how important it is to save and even made a class bank account.

The whole of Y5 were away for their trip to ‘Young Voices’, taking part in the biggest choir in the country! This week they have been reflecting on friendships and acquaintances as well as establishing boundaries.

Finally, Y6 have been showing empathy and discussing the seen or unseen effects of being bullied and about keeping self and others safe, including online. They have also been interpreting how people are feeling through Art and Drama.

Enjoyment and positivity were evident throughout the whole school, smiling faces willing to share with me what they had learnt, what a lovely school we have!
