On Board the St Faith’s Express

Over the last few weeks in Reception we have been learning all about adding and subtracting two single-digit numbers. To help us on our journey we boarded the St Faith’s Express! The train was very busy and there were lots of passengers getting on and off so we had to use our problem-solving skills at each station to work out our calculations and ensure that we had enough seats and tickets. The children were encouraged to use Mathematical language and to be creative in their thinking as they chugged their way along the track, identifying how many seats would be left as one, two or three passengers got off at the next stop. We then carefully recorded our calculations using the appropriate symbols in our ‘Maths Busy Books’. Who knew that a train journey could be so much fun!
