Fun with Maths

The start of any new year can be a daunting prospect but Year 5 seems to be feared more than any other (I am sure that are some fictitious horror stories spread by the older pupils on the playground!). However, our new Year 5 students have realised that Year 5 is just like any other year here at St Faith’s – full of challenge, hard-work but most importantly fun!

This week, the Year 5s, when not busy squishing tomatoes in the wonderful STEAM day, have been using manipulatives to prove and explain their understanding of the four main operations, which are of course, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The pupils have really impressed with their ability to reason, discuss and identify misconceptions and errors – skills which will be essential as they now apply their understanding to a Mastery level throughout the rest of the year!
