Art & Design in Year 4

Art/Design – Year 4 Sculptors

Who are these tall, skinny faceless figures with huge feet and no hair?

Sounding like the description of something from a Harry Potter film you might be mistaken for thinking that Year 4 had been invaded by Dementors.

However, on further inspection it appeared that Mrs Bowyer had introduced them all to the work of Alberto Giacometti and his mysterious elongated figures.

Having explored how artists correctly draw the proportions of the body the previous week they were challenged to identify how a Giacometti figure differs from a traditional representation.

The classroom was transformed into Frankenstein’s laboratory as the children used tin foil and art straws to create long, lumpy arms and legs, heads and bodies. The final flourish involved them connecting the pieces together to bring their own Giacometti sculpture to life!

It was such fun to see the children sculpting their figures into interesting poses and take pride in their creations. Once a lick of bronze paint has been applied you may well see their work on a future programme of ‘Fake or Fortune’ as you’ll be hard pushed to spot a Year 4 Giacometti from the real thing. Well done to all.
