Reading is the foundation of all learning

What do you do at 9am? In Year 1, it’s Phonics.

If you have ever been to a Celebration Assembly you are bound to have heard Mr Groves say his famous quote, “Reading is the foundation of all learning”. Here at St Faith’s we agree with Mr Groves and in Year 1 at 9am the children participate in a 30 minute Phonics lesson.

We use a scheme called Floppy’s Phonics where children (and adults) will recognise popular characters from their reading books. All the sessions begin with a fast paced review section where the children are given the opportunity to revisit and practice previously studied sounds. This is then followed by the introduction of a new sound. During this part of the lesson the children can build upon many skills including: blending for reading and segmenting for spelling. The children particularly enjoy looking for the new words in a picture, sometimes this can prove to be quite a challenge! Floppy’s Phonics allows the children plenty of opportunities to use the interactive whiteboard, to practise their reading and spelling and to work with their friends.

A date for your diary! If you have a child at St Faith’s in Reception or Year 1 and you would like to know more about how reading and spelling is taught, keep January 31st free. Mrs Powlter will be running Phonics sessions after school and she would love to see as many people there as possible. A letter containing more details will be sent out shortly.
