Maths to inspire, challenge and engage

The main aim for any Maths curriculum is to inspire, challenge and engage pupils, allowing their natural curiosity to develop. A Mastery approach to Maths brings together practical hands-on tasks, collaboration and reasoning. Here at St Faith’s, pupils discover by doing – whether it is out exploring numbers around the school, creating fractions using a range of hands-on manipulatives or by working alongside their peers to problem solve. Through this discovery, pupils are able to ascertain meaningful links between different mathematical concepts and ideas.

Each academic year starts with pupils working on the building blocks of all Maths – number and place value. By using a range of physical manipulatives and practical investigations, pupils work year on year to build, secure and master this fundamental knowledge. This journey starts in Reception with children working on understanding how numbers are made and learning those essential number bonds, right up to Year 6 who are learning methods for dealing with negative numbers and decimals. From there, pupils will work on the four main operations and are challenged in each lesson to reason, problem solve and explain their understanding. It is a real joy walking around the classrooms at this time of year and seeing the development of our children as they continue their journey through the school.
