Languages and Global Citizenship

Language skills at St Faith’s Prep progress throughout the school starting in Nursery where catchy songs and characters are used to ensure the children have a love for languages from an early age. As the children move up the school they are introduced to simple stories to build their language listening skills and they are encouraged to use their language knowledge through speaking exercises each lesson. Higher up the school, in Years 5 and 6, the focus is on developing a deeper understanding of French: understanding gender rules, adjective agreement and developing sentence construction.

Whilst developing a love for languages through French teaching, the children also have the opportunity during the year to discover other languages. Spanish and Italian are also explored including their cultures; topics such as food, music, landmarks and famous people are used to realise the exciting things other countries have to offer. Global citizenship and the study of other cultures is important here at St Faith’s Prep, where we nurture the idea that all people have rights and civic responsibilities that come with being a member of the world, with whole-world philosophy and sensibilities, rather than as a citizen of a particular nation or place.

Children are also encouraged to share their cultures within their classes, highlighting not only the diversity of our nation but also the amazing diversity within our school family.
