Fun with MATHS

With Young Voices over and a residential at Carroty Wood around the corner, Year 5 could be excused for thinking they were getting a few easy final weeks before half term. And then, your Math’s teacher gets out some blocks from Year 2 and asks you to build some cubes…

“Are we just playing with cubes today Mr Mackenzie?”

Oh how wrong could a class be? Little did they know they were actually investigating and proving the formulae for finding the volume of a cube or cuboid. Through the use of concrete manipulatives, the pupils were able to hypothesise and investigate how they could work out the total number of blocks used to build the cubes or cuboids and were challenged to create some formulae for this rule. The pupils worked carefully and showed excellent inquisition as they worked to explore and deepen their understanding of this challenging concept.
