Computing in the Upper School

Lightsabres ready! In Computing, the Year 6 pupils have been challenging their programming skills with a lightsabre app. Using MIT’s AppInventor, the children used the drag and drop interface to make an app for an android phone. In the process they learned about event handlers, the accelerometer sensor, and downloading sounds and graphics. They also had to apply the skills of collaboration and resilience, particularly the latter as the debugging was a major feature! The finished products had an ‘on’ button and ‘off’ button with accompanying sounds, a sabre clash sound when shaken, and screen backgrounds that matched. I am rather glad Mr Groves did not come in at the time when some rather excited children decided to re-enact a lightsabre battle!
